Auslan for Kindergarten
The Auslan Program provides weekly Auslan sessions in childcare centres and kindergartens for children aged 6 months to 5 years old. A typical session would be 15 to 20 minutes in each room of learning Auslan through interactive play, circle time, children’s books, nursery rhymes and songs. Auslan is taught by hearing people who are fluent in Auslan and who may have childcare or teaching qualifications.
Through songs, nursery rhymes, story time and interactive play children are taught Auslan signs in 15 to 20 minute sessions in each room from Nursery to Kindergarten. Utilising the ability of children to learn through a variety of learning models we ensure learning Auslan is fun, practical and interactive for each child.
The weekly sessions are taught by qualified childcare or primary qualified teachers with the appropriate Auslan skills or native deaf qualified Auslan teachers.
Auslan is a visual language that would enable users to utilise hand, arm and body movements to initiate conversations and to convey meaning.
Learning Auslan will benefit all the children at the centre and would provide an opportunity for children to access early language learning that will stimulate both the creative and academic aspects of their brain.
Alongside our Auslan program, we recommend childcare staff undertake our Professional Development in Auslan training to ensure that new signs are remembered and for Auslan to become a daily part of the centre.
